Smoke Lifting Over Washington Fires

The teams will join 32 firefighters, including three wildfire truck crews, the state already deployed as part of a mutual aid pact with the U.S. Forest Service, the Department of Environmental Protection said.



The Stickpin fire is mapped at 168 square kilometres and there have been no evacuation alerts or orders issued for Christina Lake or Grand Forks in British Columbia.

The BC Wildfire Information office has cautioned the residents of southern B.C. about the smoke coming from the fires south of the border as it believes it is making its way north. The agency mentioned that residents should prepare to see a heavy blanket settle in as early as this evening. Flory says it’s similar to what happens when the flue is opened on a fireplace.

The good news is that less smoke means restrictions on air travel will be lifted and more fire tankers can drop water and chemical retardant, Flory said.

Local officials have downgraded some evacuation notices, allowing some people to return to their homes.

As wildfires continue to pose danger to both human lives and houses in north-central Washington, authorities tried to seek help from volunteer firefighters in a bid to speed up the efforts in containing the flames. She said some people have been getting in the way of firefighting operations.

“In days to come, we know things will be hard, and we thank everyone who are doing everything they can to make sure the Evergreen State doesn’t become an ever fire state”, the governor said at a news conference.

The Okanogan Complex of wildfires was measured at 374 square miles Sunday morning, after growing more than 100 miles larger Saturday in what fire officials said was a relatively calm fire day. As a preliminary tally, Rogers said that the fire caused three families to lose their homes and that 33 other structures were also lost.

“We will have 10 helicopters on the fires by tomorrow”.

In California, more than 12,000 firefighters are battling 17 wildfires across the state.

Four other firefighters have been injured in the blaze near the village of Twisp, but only one was taken to a hospital: Daniel Lyon Jr., 25, who suffered burns to about 60% of his body and is in critical condition at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. Sixteen large wildfires are burning across central and east… The blaze, which is burning a portion of the Spokane Indian Reservation, is about 15 percent contained.

The blaze on Friday burned down Kings Canyon lodge that had been evacuated earlier within the week, the primary construction it had claimed since lightning sparked it on July 31.

In Oregon, Gov. Kate Brown is activating an additional 250 Oregon National Guard members to help fight destructive wildfires raging across the state.

“This is a reflection of severe conditions – the driest spring in over 100 years and a snowpack that was only 14% of average”, officials said on InciWeb.
