Nintendo Not Opposed to Movie Adaptations

Miyamoto has waded in movie pitches over the years and turned them all down, so it’s fair to say that he knows what kind of movie Nintendo would want to make…and it likely won’t be anything like the abomination that was the Super Mario Bros. movie.

The company confirmed that, “For Nintendo IP, a more active approach will be taken in areas outside the videogame business, including visual content production and character merchandising.”

Gaming giant Nintendo may dabble with Hollywood once again after a long bout of avoidance from the film industry. Both of these films took a notably meta approach to their respective subject matter – being more about video games than actually based upon them. Performing poorly, and receiving an overwhelmingly negative critical reaction, the film put Nintendo in the position of ardently opposing any future foray into the realm of cinema, possibly until now.

Would you like to see Nintendo bringing some of its characters to the screen, or does the thought of another Super Mario Bros. send shivers down your spine? Even the most recent addition to the list – Hitman: Agent 47 – proved that Hollywood has yet to truly nail the formula for a pitch ideal video game movie.

Furthermore, Fortune mentioned that besides the rumored talks with Netflix for live action series “Legend of Zelda” which has already been shut down, the company has no reported meeting with film studios for a movie adaptation.

As explained by Screen Rant, Nintendo gained prominence when it released the “Donkey Kong” arcade cabinet followed by the early version of the now renowned “Mario”. “I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different.” The company has also strengthened its standing as one of the best video game companies in the world with the release of their Ninetendo Family Computer, the first home gaming console, and the Nintendo Entertainment System.
