Meet Google’s New Parent Company “Alphabet”

After Google’s announcement, many in the tech community said that the company’s move might create confusion with regards to properly identifying the difference between Google and Alphabet.



The aim of the operating overhaul is to allow Google to focus on developing its own products, while enabling other Alphabet subsidiaries with the independence to further their own brands.

Declaring that Google is “not a conventional company and we never intended to become one”, Page explained that Google thrives on making “smaller bets on areas that might seem very speculative or even odd compared to our current businesses”. Google founder and CEO Larry Page will lead as the Alphabet CEO while co-founder Sergey Brin will be its president.

Pichai, a well-liked executive who oversaw Google’s Android and Chrome units, is respected in Silicon Valley for attracting top engineers. With a cutesy URL (http://abc.xyz) and Brin at the helm as president, Alphabet will seek to live up to its name as an entity that contains the innovation building blocks upon which all Silicon Valley language is built.

Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc.as the publicly traded entity, and all shares of Google will automatically convert to shares of Alphabet, with all of the same rights, Page said.

The German carmaker told WirtschaftsWoche, the German business magazine, that it will be “necessary to examine the legal trademark implications” of the name of Google’s new parent company.

I think the idea is that increased transparency will allow the company (and investors) to hold executives more accountable”, Sebastian said via email. That should give a clearer picture of how Google’s core Internet business is performing, separate from other ventures, said analyst Colin Gillis of the investment firm BGC Partners.

The company has been spreading their wings and has been soaring higher and higher, however, the more they grow the more complex does it get to manage things.

Other research divisions and the smart home business Nest will now run under Alphabet.

Each company under Alphabet will have its own CEO. The products you use everyday like search, maps, YouTube and the Android operating system will retain the Google name.

News also surfaced yesterday that an Indian-born Sundar Pichai will become the new CEO of Google.

The results for the segment companies will be broken out separately.
