Suspect in Longmont fetal-abduction case due in court

The woman accused of attacking Michelle Wilkins and cutting Wilkins’ unborn child from her womb pleaded not guilty in court on Thursday.

She has been charged with attacking Michelle Wilkins and removing her 8-month-old fetus after Wilkins responded to a Craigslist ad for baby clothes March 18. When she arrived at the Longmont home, she told later told police she thought she’d be buying baby clothes.

Dynel Lane, accused of attacking Michelle Wilkins and cutting the Longmont woman’s unborn child from her womb, is led into the courtroom before she is arraigned on attempted-murder charges in Boulder District Court in Boulder Colo., on Thursday, July 23, 2015.

Lane, 35, had been set for arraignment Friday, but the hearing was rescheduled as her case was transferred to a new judge for scheduling reasons.

The brief alleges Lane stabbed Wilkins in the neck with the broken lamp, then choked and tried smothering Wilkins with a pillow.

A spokesperson for Wilkins said she is now in Colorado. Lane was arrested shortly after showing up at a hospital claiming the baby was her own. The baby did not survive.

The victim, who had been left bleeding on a bed in the basement while the couple went to the hospital, was eventually able to make a 911 call and direct rescuers to the home, despite drifting in and out of consciousness. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office later determined the baby died from “fetal demise.” There was also no evidence of trauma or injuries.

Lane has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and first-degree unlawful termination of pregnancy.

She remained in custody on a $2 million bond at Boulder County Jail on Wednesday. She faces a maximum 48 years in prison on the attempted murder charge and 32 years on the charge of unlawful termination.
