Numbers Look Good; PlayStation 4 Emerges As The Star — Sony Corp Earnings

Not too long ago, CEO Kazuo Hirai decided not to expand smartphone operations. Now, he wants to focus efforts elsewhere. Sony’s home entertainment division-which includes TVs and AV equipment-also saw a drop in sales, decreasing 13.8 percent year-on-year. That brings Sony’s PlayStation 4 sales to 25.3 million worldwide since launch, which is fairly impressive. The company cited “a significant decrease in smartphone unit sales resulting from a strategic decision not to pursue scale in order to improve profitability”.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One typically run neck-and-neck in the console wars, but a solid pipeline of future games may have helped Sony blow past its U.S. rival in the most recent quarter. These three were mobile, gaming and digital imaging.

Sony is now implementing a refocused strategy where it shall place bigger emphasis on devices which are believed to be more profitable.

The company said it is still on track for a ¥140 billion net profit and operating income of ¥320 billion on sales of ¥7.9 trillion in the fiscal year to March next year. Sony’s figures were also boosted by exchange rate fluctuations.

This all has proven enough to offset the poor performance of a couple of other Sony divisions, like Sony pictures, which has $94 million in losses. Sony EU reminded gamers about their annual PlayStation Store Summer Sale during a PS Store update for what’s new this week, although they didn’t reveal the European start time for when these discounted games will go live.

A weaker yen offset lower sales of its smartphones and televisions, it said. The company reports that that division made $2.365 billion during last quarter. However, the greatest contributions came from the gain on sale of investments that was worth approximately $410 million (50.78 billion yen). Right now it has Street Fighter 5, Uncharted 4, No Man’s Sky, Ratchet and Clank and the Project Morpheus virtual reality headset all in the pipeline for release early on in the year.
