Marie Holmes : Brunswick Powerball winner faces Marijuana charges

The single mother out of Brunswick County who won $188 million in February from a winning Powerball ticket, was arrested at her home Thursday night on drug charges.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies cited Marie Holmes, 26, with possession of marijuana, reported by BCSO spokeswoman Emily Flax.

The arrest comes after deputies reportedly went to the home to arrest Holmes’ roommate for violating terms of his release. Lamarr McDow, who lives with Holmes, was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. McDow is now being detained in the Brunswick County Detention Facility under a $6 million bond. The search uncovered marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia and a.45-caliber pistol, deputies said. He was also cited for simple possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

A prosecutor says a lottery victor was behind the $3 million bond that got a drug suspect out of jail earlier this year. McDow was arrested in November. 2014 on heroin charges.

Another man in the home, 23-year-old Jeffrey Antuan Gause, of Shallotte, was arrested during the incident for resisting a public officer. McDow indicated to authorities they were his children.

As mentioned by Flax, complaints had been filed against the residence in the past. She went with the lump sum of $127 million, which came out to be about $88 million after taxes.

When she won the lottery, Holmes said she wanted to finish college, travel and planned to donate to her church and to charities for cerebral palsy, a condition she said her son has.

Holmes has four young children, all under the age of 9.

Also cited for marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia were Damarius Simmons, 21 and Danell McNeil, 31, who deputies said lived at Holmes’s house.
