Apple Watch accounted for 75% of smartwatch market share last quarter

Maestri said sales of the Apple Watch beat the company’s expectations, yet suspicions remain that demand for the watch could be weak, raising questions as to whether Apple, leaning heavily on the fabulous success of its iPhone, has become “a one-trick pony”.



Reporting results for its third financial quarter, Apple executives delivered several positive data points about the progress of the Apple Watch, the performance of which has been obsessively tracked since its debut in April. Market research firm Canalys has published its own estimate, suggesting that Cupertino shipped 4.2 million Apple Watches during the quarter ending June 30. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is still in the middle of transformational, super cycle with the Apple Watch, its new product category in five years.

Apple didn’t provide specific sales figures of Apple Watch and instead lumped the product in a segment that also included iPods and Apple TV units.

For the fiscal third quarter, Apple reported that revenue rose 33 percent and profit increased 38 percent when compared with the same quarter a year ago. The company itself are projecting between $49bn and $51bn, whilst forecasts expect revenues of $51.1bn in revenue for the next 3 months.

“Despite buyers being satisfied with the device, we continue to see that the product is running out of steam”, Juniper analyst James Moar said in a statement.

It took Google more than six months to cross the 100,000 figure Android Wear installations and Apple Watch has definitely beating these numbers easily. The other highlights of the earnings report was the surge revenue from Mac P.C sales and a record inflow of cash from its services business unit. Microsoft reported increased sales of these Windows Phone Lumia smartphones but revenue fell over last year because they sold almost entirely low-end devices.

Cantor Fitzgerald analysts Brian White and Isabel Zhu said the future prospects of Apple Inc. Strategy Analytics gives Apple a 75% market share of the new smartwatch segment, with closest runner-up, Samsung Electronics, with just 8%. But what of the Apple Watch?
