“Innovation and advanced technologies for next-generation devices generated at the new facility will help make an even greater contribution to providing the critical competitive advantage that the company’s USA and global customers seek”. While Apple went for a flying bowl layout, Samsung’s new Silicon Valley place of work looks similar to a huge Rubik’s Cube.

The world’s top maker of memory chips held a dedication ceremony for the new site in San Jose, California, on Thursday (U.S. time), attended by Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and some 800 key officials, Samsung said.

Jaesoo Han, Samsung president of Device Solutions America, said the opening of the new space represented “a major milestone” for the firm, adding it was its “most strategically important Samsung facility in the US and also our biggest investment in Silicon Valley“.

It has a capacity for over 2000 employees and it the will initially have 700 employees stationed in the office which will house its R&D and sales operations for its U.S. semiconductor business.

In terms of its size, the building is 1.1 million square foot, and it will play host to a number of research labs working on semiconductors, LEDs and displays. Sandwiched in between these buildings are a series of “green floors” with gardens and other areas of recreation, along with a lot of open space. They will support the Silicon Valley community, by donating $100,000 to the Family Giving Tree and another $100,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Each scholarship will cover tuition and living expenses for one year.

Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions CSR programs are focused on enhancing health, education and sustainability opportunities for children. The $300 million campus opened yesterday, cementing the South Korean company’s presence in the Valley.
