Sales of Philadelphia-area rail passes for papal visit in September won’t

SEPTA announced Tuesday that they will not resume sales this week for the 1-day Regional Rail passes for the Papal visit.

By 9:10 a.m., the site received approximately 900,000 visits and approximately 1,700 transactions were attempted per second, according to SEPTA.

When asked if some purchasers may be trying to buy the passes in bulk to resell for a profit, Williams said SEPTA would have no way to monitor or police such a situation. SEPTA is limiting the number of passes that will be sold, and requiring pre-purchase of the passes, to keep crowd numbers consistent with the capacity that will be available on Regional Rail trains. Passes cost $10 plus shipping and handling. The Airport Line, however, will operate modified inbound and outbound service throughout the weekend.

How many passes can you buy per customer?

Pope Francis will be in Philadelphia on September 26 and 27 during an eighth World Meeting of Families.

The deadline for online purchases is Sept 1.

Can I use normal passes during these days?

Each customer will be able to purchase up to 10 passes.

When the Phillies won the World Series, thousands upon thousands of fans came from around the region – many on public transportation – to line Broad Street and celebrate their newly-crowned baseball heroes.

What if all the passes sell out and I don’t get one? Users must choose a specific station and boarding block – either 5:30-8:30 am, or 8:30-12:30 pm – which will be printed on the pass and not accepted at any other station or during any other time that day. Washington, Pennbrook, Norristown TC, Media, Primos, Paoli, Radnor, Croydon, Cornwells Heights, Levittown, Warminster, Woodbourne, Wilmington and Marcus Hook will all be open on September 26 and 27.

Riders can reach SEPTA customer service at (215) 580-7800. Parking will be limited at SEPTA stations and surrounding locations, and spots are expected to fill up quickly both days.
