The station on Manhattan’s far west side extends the No. 7 train 11/2 miles past its current last stop in Times Square. The first new subway station in NYC in 25 years opens today. The 2·4 km extension runs west from 42 Street/Times Square before turning south to reach a new station at 34 St-Hudson Yards.

Construction on the $2.4 billion project, financed by the city, started in 2007 under Mayor Michael Bloomberg and was initially projected to be completed by December 2013, but officials pushed that back several times.

Sen. Charles Schumer said he too still wants a 7 train station at 41st Street. Hudson Yards is a 28-acre, $20 billion commercial, retail, residential and recreational development being built on top of the Long Island Rail Road John D. Caemmerer West Side Yard.

Mr. Gottfried, who has served in the State Legislature for more than four decades, said every transit advocate he’s spoken to believes the state needs to increase its financial support for the MTA. Additionally, in the 20 blocks west of 10th Avenue, in the heart of Manhattan, there were reportedly only 11 residences. To help pay for its next five years of repairs and expansion, the MTA wants the city to contribute a little over $3 billion.

The new station is the first to comply with ADA requirements for persons with reduced mobility.

As part of the plan, NYC paid for the extension of the No. 7 line to make the area a more attractive investment. You’d be hard pressed to find a group of people more excited about riding the subway.
