The $35 Google Chromecast made waves in the streaming dongle world, inspiring companies like Amazon and Roku to throw in their variants and now it seems that Mountain View is getting ready for Chromecast 2. The new device will reportedly include support for something called Chromecast Audio, a feature that will let users connect their Chromecast to a speaker using an auxiliary cord to produce “high-quality” audio with multi-room support. I’m always interested in trying out new set top boxes to see which offer the best experience, and the Chromecast is definitely high on my list to evaluate.

Just a week before the event, popular Google blog, 9to5Google, managed to obtain internal docs that bring a new player to the game; the second generation Chromecast device. The original streaming dongle only supported 802.11b/g/n. The second generation Chromecast appears to be a puck, available in yellow, red or black.

Google may also be introducing Chromecast Audio, which would plug into any speaker system via an aux in port to play audio from a user’s devices. The report claims the revamped hardware will make connections to devices quicker, a feature the leak dubs “Fast Play”. Some analysts, however, believe that this will be on September 29, the day Google will unveil its two new Nexus smartphones.

Sadly though, 9to5Google was only able to get a very blurry image of the new app and its UI interface which has been redesigned from the ground up. According to leaked pictures and documents seen by 9to5Google, the Google Chromecast 2 features considerably beefed up specs and features to take on the new Apple TV.

The “new Chromecast” will also support content feeds, though it’s unclear what sort of feeds Google is referring to.

The device – internally known by its codename “Hendrix”, supposedly – is said to support Sonos-style streaming from an Android device, Chrome browser, or other source.
