Lenovo Debuts ThinkPad P Series 15- and 17-Inch Mobile Workstations

In addition to Xeon processors that are based on Intel’s latest Skylake architecture, the P50 and P70 offer up to 64GB of RAM, up to 1TB solid-state drives, two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports, and – if you’re willing to pay even more – a super sharp 4K display.

“We are excited to bring Intel Xeon’s legacy of performance, manageability and reliability to mobile workstations”, said Navin Shenoy, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Mobility Client Platforms Group.

In terms of office connectivity, the ThinkPad P70 also comes with two Intel Thunderbolt 3 ports for those people who need to transfer massive amounts of data as quickly as possible.

The new ThinkPad P series has two models: the 15-inch ThinkPad 50 and the 17-inch ThinkPad P70.

The ThinkPad P50 is touted as “Lenovo’s thinnest and lightest full-function mobile workstation yet” offering users with an excellent set of specifications.

The slightly higher-end P70 features the same mobile Intel Xeon CPU, GPU and RAM options with up to a 17-inch 4K UHD display.

Lenovo aims to sell ThinkPad P70 to high-end professionals in industries ranging from media and entertainment to oil and gas.

At 7.6 pounds the machine is much heavier than the average laptop, but that’s the tradeoff for desktop-like performance on the go.

The new ThinkPad P50 and P70 are mil-spec tested for maximum durability, and also come loaded with the most advanced components and features available in a mobile workstation. The ThinkPad P70 has capacity for up to four storage devices and up to a terabyte of SSD storage, utilizing the latest PCIe technology “for speeds up to five times faster than current SATA technology”. The screen can achieve 100% color gamut, according to Lenovo, and you can calibrate the display to achieve more accurate colors by running the pre-installed utility, shutting the lid down and letting the software read and adjust your screen’s settings. Whereas the older ThinkPad W550s and ThinkPad W541 feature a swipe to scan reader, the new biometric scanner on the P Series requires you to touch your finger to the reader to scan.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P50 features a 15.6 inch display and a starting price of $1599, while the P70 is a 17 inch laptop with a starting price of $1999. Both laptops will be available in the final quarter of this year.
