CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivers the keynote address at the Facebook F8 Developer Conference in March. Many users have asked for this button for a long time, but Facebook declined to give this option in fear of upvoting and downvoting by users.

Zuckerberg didn’t definitively say exactly what shape this empathy button will take, but it seems it will likely be some form of an “I’m sorry” option.

Some analysts though aren’t convinced that Facebook will end up launching a “dislike” button.

This is a common issue raised by Facebook users – it doesn’t feel right to “Like” a post where someone is expressing sad news, but there’s no other way to sympathize or empathize via the current options (outside of commenting).

The CEO further reiterated that Facebok did not get the dislike button for a while because they did not want to turn it into a forum, where people can like or dislike posts. When users get on the page, Facebook’s algorithm starts its engine, and gives you the most interesting information based on your friends and brands you’ve hit like on. “I think we’ve finally heard you and we’re working on this and hopefully we will deliver something that meets the needs of our community”, Zuckerberg finally said. Andrew Digiorgio of Texas said he thinks it’s a good idea because it would serve that exact objective . Fair enough, writing a Facebook status is hard enough, without giving people the power to essentially grade our posts.

Writing for The Telegraph, Carl Miller, Research Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media said: “It nearly certainly will not be a “dislike” button”.

“People aren’t looking for an ability to downvote other people’s posts, what they really want is to be able to express empathy”, he told an audience at a Q&A in Menlo Park, California. The social network giant has apparently been working on it for quite some time, and it wants to make interactions simple and easy. The button that is in demand is the “dislike” button.

“Depending on how that goes, we’ll roll it out more broadly”, he said.

There are also those who just seem to run out of words to say and believe that clicking “Like” is enough to express all his thoughts.
