What Newitz found after combing through the data was worse. Based on mockups unearthed in the hack, the app planned on attaching dollar amounts to pictures of each wife in a game that resembles apps where users rate men and women based on their attractiveness.

Writing for tech site Gizmodo, journalist (and site editor) Annalee Newitz analysed the data from the leak to see if there was any truth to the oft-repeated claims that nearly all the female profiles were fake. But, dig even further into the data and only 12,000 of those profiles belong to real women, who were active members on the site. All eight of them are seeking class-action status, and would as such represent about 37 million affected Ashley Madison users.

I think most people can agree that Ashley Madison is pretty awful. “In bed we understood each other well but otherwise we didn’t have much to say”.

That was how I found out that my partner was engaged in an affair. Any man feeling the urge to be unfaithful could easily go to a prostitute – at least here in Germany, where prostitution is open, legal and duly taxed.

Want to know more about the data and the process of how it was gathered? They need to be liked, if not necessarily loved. And hacking would be catastrophic if it enables terrorists to take control of airliners and fly them into tall buildings or nuclear reactors, or obtain the launch codes for a nation’s nuclear arsenal.

However, the 59-year-old married father-of-two has denied any links to the site.

Hollywood plans to cash in on the recent Ashley Madison scandal. It wasn’t happening, though – all they got was messages from bots and fake accounts. Now a report has emerged that Ashley Madison was doing something really gross.

So if there is a silver lining to this story at all, it’s that not as many spouses might have been cheating via Ashley Madison as previously thought.

The exhausted old joke that “there are no girls on the internet” is laughed off nowadays – but it seems it might actually be true on Ashley Madison.

Ashley Madison does not verify email addresses, which means it is possible to use the site with someone else’s address. It does, however, shed merciless light on the fragility of human relationships.
